For those of you just starting out in your career as a navigating officer here are a few hints and tips to make life easier, and improve your standards.
There is a lot of paperwork nowadays as a junior and senior officer. However the time to get involved in it is NOT when you are supposed to be navigating. It is unavoidable in some cases but you should set a time limit of 5 to 10 mins before leaving the paper and looking out the window. Note out the window, they are the big transparent things on the edges of the bridge that allow you to see out. I know the sarcasm is there, but listen to the officers who tell you to look out of these. You are supposed to be in charge of the vessel. That means watching what is going on on deck as well as looking out for Ships, fishing vessels, yachts (WAFIs), and heaven forbid, life rafts and lifeboats.
Take time to learn all about the radar, trail maneuver, relative and true motion, do not let anyone dictate to you that Only true is relevant, or only relative is good. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. But remember, Relative motion has the least input from outside sources of information and is therefore more likely to be true information, using GPS speed has so many errors you may as well input a guestimate. Think about the information you are getting from any instrument, Is it reliable, has it made any assumptions . Is the output valid ( are the inputs valid) remember Garbage in Garbage out). AND what is on a screen is not as acurate as what yo can see out of the window!

When I was working on the Cunard liners we had strict "English Only" in the public areas and when working for all crew members. On these ships we may have over 35 different nationalities and they all used and learnt English. The standard was excellent and rarely did we have problems with misunderstanding.
I have since sailed on various other cruise ships and find it very difficult if I hear crew using their native language. The senior officers /heads of department and supervisors have to insist on English being used whilst working.
On large cruise ships English has to be the default language in emergency situations.
Clear simple English. Easy!

For those contemplating a move to LNG
It seems that there are many tanker officers out there wanting to transfer to LNG.
Well It is understandable, No tank cleaning, more money on average, and a reputation for an easier life.
A lot of this is true, however because of this there is intense competition to be on these vessels and the companies have therefore a lot higher caliber of people to chose from. Many companies are now taking only experience LNG people, a catch 22 situation where to get the job you have to already have the job somewhere else. And since the Nakilat fleet trained up so many people there has been a marked increase in officers claiming LNG experience. So now companies are only offering trial trips for first joiners, Even junior officers are being sifted through.
It is no good being focused on the Ballast operations as a junior officer. The cargo what the vessel is there for. And senior officers, start teaching the juniors, remember if you get to be a Captain, the men sent to be Chief officer are those you have as 3/O and 2/O now. How confident will you be in them if you know that they have not been taught to a high standard.

When this site was first proposed I was very interested. Unfortunately when the site went live I was away at sea, on a vessel with no net access. So I have only just been able to register as a Mentor.
So Ladies and gents, For those seeking a mentor in LNG cargo operations, (Chief mate of over 7 years experience), Product tankers, Crude oil, North sea Standby, supply, shuttle tankers. I would be more than happy to help.
I was also a lecturer in Stability and construction, also Navigation.
